An aerial shot of The Stones at Slane Castle, one of the world's most beautiful venues, set in 1500 acres of the Boyne Valley in Ireland. Obviously the castle was never built with the intention of shipping in 60,000 people at a time. This made it difficult to reach, and it could only be accessed via country lanes. Therefore bands flew in from Dublin, which meant there was always a supply of helicopters parked backstage by the River Boyne, fuelled and available for aerial photographs! The M1 motorway, opened in 2003 may well change that situation. My first visit here was with Thin Lizzy in 1981, when they were supported by U2 - this Stones show was only the second to be held at the venue. Sadly part of the castle was severely damaged by fire in 1991, so these pictures capture more than just a rock show. |
